The article seeks to establish a theoretical framework that understands internet memes as a language, identifying eight factors common to these digital contents.
This article seeks to present a theoretical framework that understands internet memes as a language. Drawing on the main research on the subject, we argue that memes share, to varying degrees, characteristics intrinsic to their language. We list eight factors common to these digital contents that make up what we call the language of memes: amateurism, intertextuality, replicability, representational synthesis, humor, identities and belonging, longevity and multimodality. Finally, we build an understanding of what potential conflicts and challenges arise from this intersection and of the importance of mastering these attributes in order to minimize them.
