In June 2020, according to data from Inpe, the number of fires in the Amazon was the highest observed for that month since 2007. In September 2020, again according to Inpe data, the number of fires in a year in the Pantanal broke historical records. The fire outbreaks from January to September exceeded the highest peak recorded in 2005. The data had intense repercussions in the mainstream press and generated enormous commotion and demonstrations against the Bolsonaro Government in different segments. It is known that Bolsonaro has acted timidly in combating the deforestation of native vegetation in the region. The report presented below seeks to account for this scenario, analyzing in particular the data on the Amazon and the Pantanal of Mato Grosso do Sul in a set of Bolsonarist groups on WhatsApp.
