BOOK SYNOPSIS In times of crisis of democracy, the concept of the public sphere proves useful once again for generating understanding of the challenges at hand. Whether because of the saturated fragmentation of discursive flows on digital platforms, the explosion of phenomena linked to disinformation, the centrality acquired by non-human entities in structuring present-day public opinion, or the social struggles and the thematization of public problems as they have been organized, the notion is taken up again, 60 years after the publication of The Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere, to speak of the possibilities for the survival of democracy. This book gathers a set of chapters that set out to mobilize the concept of the public sphere and deliberationist lenses to read not only the broader picture of democratic erosion, but also the reconfigurations of communicative practices and public clashes that mark the contemporary.
