This collection brings together research on disinformation and political communication from an Ibero-American perspective, discussing the challenges that a new technological era poses to electoral campaigns and public debate. The work was co-edited by María Jesús Fernández Torres and Laura Teruel Rodríguez, under the ALICE imprint, with the participation of researchers from different countries in the region, including coLAB/UFF.
BOOK SYNOPSIS Disinformation, a booming phenomenon in contemporary society, affects the functioning of democracies, eroding trust in institutions and the media and polarizing public opinion. This monograph, which brings together the work of some twenty researchers from various universities in Latin America and Spain, examines how fake news and informational manipulation impact Ibero-American democracies, with special emphasis on their effects on institutional credibility and individual freedom. From manipulation strategies in electoral periods to the proliferation of “smokescreens” and the emergence of populist leaderships, this volume offers a detailed analysis of the complex link between disinformation and political power. Each chapter contributes to a better understanding of the factors, actors and interests that generate and disseminate false information, as well as the role of platforms and social networks in amplifying this phenomenon. In addition, it underscores the essential role of quality journalism, media literacy and verification in the fight against information disorders.
