An analysis of Bolsonarist WhatsApp memes and their relationship with political events in Brazil.
This article investigates humor in internet memes that circulated in Bolsonaro supporters’ WhatsApp groups during six months of his government. The content analysis sets out to understand which nationalist rhetorical elements are present in the memes shared by the Brazilian far right, notably those that directly mention Bolsonaro, which anti-democratic expressions these memes mobilize, and how their circulation reflects, in some way, recent events in the country’s political life. It concludes that the images circulated in these groups help pave the way for a far-right visual humor, with strongly ideological and radicalized content.
