A scoping review of 31 articles on emerging uses of artificial intelligence in qualitative research and their ethical considerations.
This article aims to conduct a scoping review of academic materials that discuss the application of artificial intelligence (AI) based on large language models to assist qualitative research, as well as the ethical considerations involved in such uses. To this end, a scoping review was carried out of 31 articles published in journals and conferences indexed in SCOPUS and Web of Science and available on preprint servers, given the novelty of the topic, from 2018 to 2023, based on associated terms. As a way of demonstrating this potential, we chose to run an experiment with ChatPDF, an AI tool based on natural language processing, to assist in the review. The results of the review indicate more consolidated uses of AI for abstracts, summaries and code generation, but there are indications of uses for theme generation and sentiment analysis, as well as data extraction and processing. The ethical discussion takes on a more normative and cautious dimension regarding the use of AI for qualitative research.
