DDoSLab report on the use of TikTok and its relationship with political polarization in Brazil.
This report is based on a sample of 23,139 videos published by 264 politicians’ profiles on TikTok. The data collected refer to the period between October 2018 and March 2022, when the deadline for stepping down from public office closed, according to the calendar of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The study seeks to assess how politicians use and incorporate TikTok in their respective political communication strategies, what kind of content they produce, and what concrete results, in terms of reach and engagement, they obtain. Much is said about the differences in how left-wing and right-wing politicians appropriate digital platforms. The study also seeks to address this distinction, presenting empirical data that support that the conservative-reactionary camp has used TikTok more and better to reach greater visibility and elicit more engagement from the public.
