An analysis of the manifestations of gender-based political violence on digital platforms, based on a database of more than 4 million mentions of women parliamentarians.
The objective of this article is to analyze the manifestations of gender-based political violence on digital platforms. Drawing on the literature on gendered violence and bringing contributions from political communication, the study discusses the offenses directed at women parliamentarians and the relationship of these aggressions with the scenario of political polarization, also observing the discursive and technological repertoires of this violence. The research starts from a database of more than 4 million mentions of women parliamentarians on X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Next, a comparative case study was undertaken on the networks of two parliamentarians. It is argued that although online violence is seen as less pernicious, it can operate as a supporting element for more harmful forms. It also concludes that there is a set of strategies triggered as a way of disguising the attacks, including the use of humor, contributing to a certain process of normalization of violence.
