This article sets out to discuss how political play can be read as a rhetorical strategy, presented in defense of reactionary positions publicly expressed by political actors of the conservative camp. The text is divided into three moments: in the first, it relativizes the position of some authors, according to which play would be a repertoire typically undertaken by repressed groups. Next, it revisits the debate in the field of critical humor studies on racist and misogynistic jokes. Finally, it proposes play as an additional thesis to the rhetorics of intransigence, as formulated by Hirschman.
